There are numerous income categories on the internet, but I typically like to categorize them into three main groups. Before delving into these categories, it’s essential to understand that for money to be exchanged online, there must always be something to sell.
Now, don’t worry too much about this concept; it’s not overly complicated, and I’ll break it down for you shortly. Essentially, you’re either monetizing attention, a product, or a service. I’ll provide further explanations on this later.
Let’s now explore the three broad ways you can start earning money online, which you can also start using today.
The 3 Income Categories On The Internet
Below are the 3 income categories to start earning money online, according to Beston Keghtor
1. PLATFORMS INCOME
This refers to the revenue share model, where platform owners distribute earnings to content creators. Numerous platforms offer lucrative opportunities for users to monetize their activities. Let’s categorize these into three main types.
Firstly, some platforms compensate users for publishing content. Prominent examples include YouTube, TikTok, Medium, and a host of others.
Here’s how it works: When you upload content, typically videos, and it garners significant views, these platforms display advertisements from various companies on your content. As viewers engage with your content and watch these ads, you earn a portion of the advertising revenue generated.
This means that those companies have paid the owners of the platforms a good sum, most times in millions to advertise the products on your content and that of others.
So the owners of the platforms will then remove their share of the money and then pay you, the content creator, your share.
The second is similar to the first above but the only difference is that you publish the content on your website and then give them access to display adverts on your content, which is mostly in text format.
This is called blogging sometimes and the biggest of these platforms (Ad Networks) that pay money to you under this category is Google AdSense. Some other Ad Networks include PropellerAds, , Amazon etc.
You pick a niche, set up your blog and publish highly-value articles on it. Then you sign up on AdsNetworks, provide the required information and integrate your website with theirs.
When they have adverts related to your niche, they display those adverts on your website and anytime your website visitors click on the Ads, you get paid. This process is called Pay Per Click.
The third way to earn from platforms is by performing simple tasks. You sign up on those platforms and have access to some specific tasks. You then select the ones that align with your values and complete them as requested.
Once it is confirmed that the task is completed, the platform pays money into your account.

Remote here, means that you work from anywhere. You are not confined to a particular location or office to deliver your job responsibility. Freelancing allows you to combine several jobs at a time and deliver them all accurately.
Now, remote work requires skills. You must have an in-demand skill if you want to start earning money online as a freelancer.
This is not limited to Digital Skills, but digital skills sell here the most. I mean, you can be an expert in any area of life and be able to offer a solution to someone else across the globe. Coaches in different spheres of life do this so much.
However, I will be focusing more on digital skills. You can sign up on Freelancing platforms, attract your gigs outside of freelancing platforms or go with both.
There are freelancing platforms like Fiverr, UpWork, freelancer etc. where you can easily visit, sign up, optimize your account and start submitting proposals for available gigs.
On the other side, you can build a personal brand off freelancing platforms, and market your skills through your website and social media handles to attract the right clients who will pay you for your service.
Digital skills to help you start earning money online as a freelancer
1. Website Design:
Wow! This has been a game changer for many online business owners. If you have read The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco then you will understand how the knowledge of Website Design is essential for those who want to start earning money online.
Apart from building your own website, blog, landing pages, and sales funnels, you can also offer website design services to others and get paid well.

Here is how you can get started if you want to start earning money online with what you already know. Do this exercise in a very quiet place where there are no distractions.
1. Make a list of all the services you have rendered to people in the past. Note that this includes free services as well.
2. Choose the services that people have paid you for in the past and those for which you did not charge, but people would have paid if you had demanded payment. List them separately.
3. Among the list in number 2 above, select the top 3 in which you have a high level of expertise. Ensure they are the ones for which people are willing to pay money. In most cases, these top 3 are relatable.
4. If your top 3 are relatable, optimise your social media handles to showcase them as the services you offer. If they are not relatable, then choose the top 1 and optimize your social media handles for it.
5. Start posting content around these services. This content can include the work you have done for past clients, your experiences on the job, simple tips to educate your audience about your line of service, trends in your niche, and how they can benefit your audience. This will attract people to hire and pay you good money.
6. Search the internet for other people who are already in the same business and see what they are doing. Learn from them and implement the knowledge to grow your own business.
As time unfolds, you will discover many other ways to monetize that same knowledge. You can utilize all the 3 income categories explained earlier in this article.
Apart from the easiest method explained above, consider selling other people’s products for a commission. This is known as Affiliate Marketing.
Here, you recommend a product to someone who needs it, and when they purchase the product, the vendor pays you an agreed commission.
Technology has neatly organized this process so that for any product you want to promote, you receive a unique link. This link is exclusively yours, ensuring that anyone who clicks on it and makes a purchase, the commission is paid to you.
Affiliate Marketing works for both physical and digital products, though digital products are typically easier to promote than physical ones. The beauty of Affiliate Marketing lies in its simplicity; you don’t necessarily need to promote numerous products—sometimes one good product is enough.
As you continue promoting, sales increase, and your commission flows into your account. However, like any other business endeavour, there’s a learning phase associated with Affiliate Marketing.
It encompasses several skills that you must learn to succeed. The duration of this learning phase isn’t fixed and depends on your pace of learning.
Affiliate Marketing is a business model that allows you to start earning online from day one. It’s something you’ve likely been doing informally—like recommending products to friends—without realizing it’s a business model.
